TWO HOURS TO DOOM
"Once again, the fate of the world was trembling in the balance."
Better known by its later title, RED ALERT, Peter Bryan George's thriller of mutually assured destruction achieved immortality through Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation: DR. STRANGELOVE, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. George, a collaborator on the screenplay along with Kubrick and Terry Southern, wrote his original novel as a tense speculative thriller, with little tonal resemblance to Kubrick's black comedy. George was a flight lieutenant in the RAF at the time of composition and issued TWO HOURS TO DOOM under a pseudonym, but later published a novelisation of DR. STRANGELOVE as Peter George: an adaptation of an adaptation of his own work, three times removed.
