THE WONDER CITY OF OZ
After Baum had a falling out with W.W. Denslow, the illustrator of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ, John R. Neill took on the job of illustrating the second Oz book, THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ (1904). He continued illustrating the series beyond Baum's death, providing the legitimacy of continuity for Ruth Plumly Thompson, Baum's successor. WONDER CITY OF OZ is the first of three Oz books written (and illustrated) by Neill after Thompson stepped back; his authored works are considered part of the Famous Forty, the Oz canon.
