Known as "The Edwardian Cat Artist That Went Mad," Wain was once "the most famous cat artist on earth" (Haining). His work in conceiving an entire Catland inspired the creators of Felix the Cat and even Mickey Mouse; Haining notes that Wain also "played a major part in making the cat the most popular of all domestic pets." The pictures in this book immerse the reader in Catland, in which Miss Muffet, Jack Horner, and other characters of traditional nursery rhymes (many from Mother Goose, some about Christmas, etc.) become humanized cats. The double-page spread depicts cats viewing a magic lantern show. A wonderfully weird and beautiful book by perhaps the best known English illustrator of cats.
