You cannot undo Liver, you can take
A finger off, a leg; make and remake
The nose, the ear, the face; relieve or break
A compensating heart, fake and refake
A joint disabled or a stomach-ache
But liver (Hepar), liver must go on
Gorey's first commercially published book was an earlier collection by Moore, ILLEGITIMATE SONNETS (1950), only three years before this production. As an early work, its illustrations have not yet cohered into what would become Gorey's characteristic style – but a number of its traits are still present: lithe, almost Manneristic body shapes; unnecessarily complex patterns; just enough additional background detail to capture Gorey's unique tone. Quite scarce signed by Gorey.
