"One wonders just what can be meant / By this implacable descent."
THE SINKING SPELL
By Edward Gorey
(1964) [i.e. 1965]
Signed first printing of this teasing short story, about an unseen "it" slowly sinking in various scenes within a vaguely Edwardian setting.
THE SINKING SPELL
"It now declines in fretful curves / Among the pickles and preserves."
First published in HOLIDAY MAGAZINE, this story was also among those collected in AMPHIGOREY. For such a simple premise, the story feels action packed, as a ceaselessly well-dressed family watches Its descent from various rooms, vantage points, and times of day. Bibliography Toledano notes the printed copyright date of 1964, but that the book was not actually published until 1965.
