"I still consider to have positively influenced the creation of a new Soviet book for children and, what is more important, this book acquired a character of its own." – Lebedev on his 1920s collaborations with Marshak, quoted in Lemmens and Stommels
Children are taught about modernism and scientific progress through a comparison of tools of "yesterday" next to the tools of "today": the plume beside the typewriter, buckets for gathering well-water beside indoor plumbing, candles beside lightbulbs. Lebedev, ever experimenting, depicts the old methods with sketch-like drawings and the new methods with stencil-like designs. Scarce in any early printing, this is the same printing featured in Lévèque and Plantureux's Dictionnaire des illustrateurs de livres d'enfants Russes.
