By Alfred, Lord Tennyson, illustrated by Howard Pyle
First edition of Pyle's second book, incorporating elements of the Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau in the style of a medieval illuminated manuscript.
Very good minus.
THE LADY OF SHALOTT
"The knights come riding two and two:/ She Hath no loyal knight and true,/ The Lady of Shalott."
A notable effort in American color printing, this book was not one of Pyle's favorites, yet it (with "Yankee Doodle") remains unique in style and color for Pyle. His style in here has an Art Nouveau flavor very similar to Walter Crane's work, with elaborate and lush color lithographs and calligraphic text incorporated into the art. A beautiful book.
New York: Dodd Mead & Company, (1881). 9'' x 8''. Original tan pictorial publisher's cloth binding. All edges gilt. Numerous full-page and smaller illustrations throughout with calligraphic text. Floral patterned endleaves. pages. Ink gift inscription to second front flyleaf dated "Christmas '84." Some bumping to corners and spine, with light rubbing; small stain to spine. Light foxing to early pages; spine cracked in the gutter of some gatherings, light surface damage to pages 19-20 and 29-30 where they had stuck together. Else sound and bright.
