BACKBONE OF THE KING
Based upon an ancient Hawaiian legend of a brave young boy who endeavors to restore his father to his position of royal guardian to the king, this book retells the 19th-century version of the story by Moses Nakuina. Brown discovered the legend on a trip to Hawai'i and spent 12 months painting in preparation for the book. When University of Hawaii Press published a new edition in 1984, Brown sent this copy of it to Margaret A. Evans, which is presented with a set of original linoleum block prints with an inscription dating to the year of the first edition (1966). The prints are stunning and each one is signed by Brown. An amazing selection of work by a great Caldecott Award winning children's illustrator.
