This one-penny chapbook presents an illustrated version of the rhyme that Iona and Peter Opie call "more parodied than any other nursery story." First published by Newbery in 1755, THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT was fertile ground for chapbook publishers, who eagerly pirated the illustrations and verses from one another: the woodcuts of this edition were later copied by Kendrew.
The wrappers of this copy bear two figures unrelated to the rhyme, a Tinker on the front wrapper and on the rear a bearded "Jew," stereotypical but not exactly caricatured, carrying a box of wares for sale. OCLC locates only two copies, both in the UK. A rare survival.
