THE ENCHANTED LAND
"Never did harp-strings yield such music as her voice, never did fairy strains pour forth such wonder-stirring sound."
Katharine Cameron, an alumna of the Glasgow School of Art, was closely associated with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his circle of Art Nouveau boundary-pushers. Working in the Glasgow Style that fused Celtic Revival, Japonisme, the Arts and Crafts Aesthetic, and the aforementioned Art Nouveau, Cameron exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1894, although the Academy would not admit any woman full members until 1936. This title beautifully showcases Cameron's design sensibilities, beginning with the binding, which she designed in addition to painting the illustrations. The plates range from a more classical feel to high Glasgow Style, with symmetrical compositions framed by natural elements. It is a gorgeous example of the wide appeal of Scottish artists.
