Contemporary peepshow of the Great Industrial Exposition of Berlin, the "impeded world fair" that combined innovative technological exhibits with an amusement park.
PANORAMA DER BERLINER GEWERBE AUSSTELLUNG
When extended, the 6 color lithographed scenes offer a detailed three dimensional view of the main hall of the Exhibition. The hall includes vendors for chocolate, coffee, meats, clothing, and other amusement park-type treats, culminating in the final panel that shows off technological wonders: one side for gas, the other electric. The final scene also features a central carved medallion design visible even when the peepshow is closed. Although not called a "World's Fair," this was a technicality. When completed it was larger than any previous fair had been (more than 1 million square yards), featuring nearly 4000 participants and attracting 7 million visitors.
Berlin: Oscar Michaelis, 1896. 6'' x 4.75''; depth to 16'' with bellows extended. Single peepshow with 6 panels (including cover and and backdrop) opening to 19 inches. In original pictorial slipcase with map of grounds on rear panel. Light edgewear to outer panels, careful tape repair to top final bellow. Box with tape repair along one side, a bit soiled, remarkably intact.
