First edition of this Père Castor bestiary of the French countryside, featuring striking and stylized Art Deco color lithographs by Russian émigré artist Guertik, scarce in this condition.
LES BÊTES QUE J'AIME
It was émigré artists like Guertik, Nathalie Parain, Alexandra Exter, Feodor Rojankowsky, and Georges Cherkessof, working with avant-garde Constructivist, Dadaist, and Minimalist art philosophies, that gave the Père Castor books their greatest distinction and gained them long-lasting fame. An unusually nice copy.
Paris: Flammarion, 1934. 8.25'' x 8.25''. Original side-stapled color pictorial wrappers. Illustrated by Guertik with wonderful bold and stylized color lithographs. Text in French. pages. A bit of typical toning to text block edges, wrappers only lightly rubbed and soiled.
