By Lewis Carroll, illustrated by Mabel Lucie Attwell
First printing of the Attwell edition, the much scarcer deluxe cloth issue, with gorgeous Edwardian color plates by one of the most successful illustrators of the era.
ALICE IN WONDERLAND
"Few illustrators have approached the task of ALICE with more personal flair than Mabel Lucie Attwell." – Jeff A. Menges
In this production Attwell created an Edwardian dreamscape of golden hues and elegant fantasy, making her re-imagination of ALICE one of the most distinctive and acclaimed of the early post-Tenniel illustrators. The unmistakable appeal of Attwell's version has influenced many later artists "in forms as distinct as Disney's 1951 decorous animated heroine through to Helen Oxenbury's casual and carefree youngster of 1999" (Jaques & Giddens). Attwell's characters have a fey quality – even the humans – that effaces the boundary between our world and the magic of Fairyland, and that remains spellbinding.
