The first incarnation of this work was the first children's book of the Peregrin Press, founded by the artist and her husband, the journalist Jakob Seidmann, as part of the avant-garde crowd in 1920s Munich and Berlin. The English language edition of Seidmann-Freud's famous DIE FISCHREISE (1923) contains the 12 beautiful and unusual full-page color lithographs in her modern, stylized fashion – but the text has been changed. American children's book author Alice Dalgliesh felt that the German text was too long and complicated for American children, so she took the pictures to a classroom, where the children came up with a simple story line that Dalgliesh refined and sent back to Germany to the Peregrine Press to be printed. Very scarce.
