D.H. LAWRENCE: AN UNPROFESSIONAL STUDY
"Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death."
The French-Cuban American writer is best known today for her vivid diaries, but her work as a critic is seeped in similar aesthetics. Her talent for moving fluidly from evocative specifics to larger philosophical musing is in full evidence here, and Nin's sympathetic reading of Lawrence would go on to inform her own writing. The year this study appeared in Paris, Nin met the American writer Henry Miller, who became an enthusiastic early reader of the book. A formative work in Nin's distinguished career.
