Fearing an attack by their old enemy, the Thread, the Dragonmen search for a woman to lead them, armed with a telepathic connection to a queen dragon. After the warm reception of two novellas in her new Pern universe published in the science fiction magazine ANALOG, DRAGONRIDER and WEYR SEARCH, McCaffrey combined them with further material to publish this, the first of her nearly two dozen novels in the series. The two novellas won the Hugo and Nebula Awards, respectively, making McCaffrey the first woman to receive either award. A lovely copy.
