First edition of this 1950s children's classic about a young married couple with Dalmatians whose canine family grows, quite by accident, to 101.
"Like many other much-loved humans, they believed that they owned their dogs, instead of realizing that their dogs owned them."
The story immediately captured readers with its delightfully evil villain, Cruella de Vil, as well as its imaginative depiction of the social life of dogs. The protagonist of the book, Pongo, was in fact named after Smith's own Dalmatian. Illustrators Janet and Anne Grahame-Johnstone were twin sisters who became famous partially for their work in this book, featuring detailed depictions of dogs in play. Their images speak to the visual potential of the story that Walt Disney Studios must have seen when they acquired the rights to turn the story into a feature-length film in 1961. A wonderful copy, in a dust jacket much nicer than commonly found.
