First English edition of this memoir of the Holocaust, one of the most important firsthand accounts of life in Nazi-run ghettos and concentration camps.
Very good plus in like jacket.
"Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed."
Wiesel's autobiography begins in 1941 with a story of the Gestapo summarily executing a train full of Jews being taken to Poland, continues with life in the Sighet Ghettos in 1944, and then the transfer of Wiesel and his family to Auschwitz, culminating in the Death March from Auschwitz to Buchenwald in the last months of the war. The work first appeared in Buenos Aires under the title AND THE WORLD REMAINED SILENT in 1956; this edition was translated from the French edition of 1958. While difficult, it is perhaps one of the 20th-century works most necessary to read.
London: Macgibbon & Kee, 1960. 7.25'' x 4.75''. Original textured yellow cloth, spine lettered in black. Original unclipped (12s 6d) pictorial dust jacket designed by Cowan. Translated by Stella Rodway; with foreword by François Mauriac. 139, pages. A bit of foxing to edges of text block and jacket, light soiling to rear jacket panel.
