"A survival guide for geniuses"
By Orson Scott Card
Inscribed first printing of the beloved science-fiction novel, winner of both the Hugo and Nebula awards, with a fantastic inscription by Card.
Fine in nearly fine jacket.
"It was a lie, of course, that it wouldn't hurt a bit."
First published as a short story in ANALOG in 1977, then expanded here into a full-length novel about child savants who use virtual reality video games to fight an alien species at devastating personal cost. Given the well-known anti-LGBT+ views of the author, the book is a great modern example of the argument that the best books transcend the intent of their creators: ENDER'S GAME is one of the most empathetic explorations of interplanetary contact in science fiction, a book fundamentally about outsiders and "otherness." It has also been instrumental to a generation of introverted kids who found comfort in a morally complex book about nerds on a mission to save the world – this copy's inscription pithily reads: "A survival guide for geniuses."
(New York): TOR, (1985). 8.25'' x 5.25''. Original quarter dark blue cloth, light blue paper boards, silver-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($13.95) dust jacket designed by Suzanne Lobel with art by John Harris. , 357, pages. Inscribed by Card in blue ink on half title: "To Hank – / A survival guide for geniuses / Orson Scott Card / 21 Sep '95." Only lightest rubbing to jacket extremities.
