"They sat there by the hole, waiting for the fox to come out. <br />"And so far as I know, they are still waiting."
The comment of Knowles & Malmkjaer that "Dahl allies himself with the child reader against the world of adults" feels very true for this book, which celebrates the clever Mr. Fox and his animal friends as they find increasingly elaborate solutions to the obstacles created by humans. As with most of Dahl's works, the undercurrent of violence in the animal's "game" of survival adds an edge to an otherwise whimsical tale – a formula that continues to earn the admiration of children and the consternation of adults. Inspiration for the Wes Andersen film of the same name. A nice copy.
