First UK edition of "the birth of a phenomenon" that would lead to the turning point in Steven Spielberg's career.
About fine in about-fine jacket.
"Back in 1973 and 1974, nobody – myself least of all – knew that we were involved in the birth of a phenomenon that would retain a strange resonance in the culture for a quarter of a century... and in the worldwide debut of a director who would go on to influence the film industry like none other." – Peter Benchley
Inspired partly by Benchley's journalist work on shark attacks, JAWS became an immediate bestseller and its film rights were quickly optioned. While it wasn't Spielberg's first feature-length film, JAWS is the film that made him famous, and granted him the autonomy to produce other beloved movies like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and E.T. Benchley said of the creation of the film: "All of us [...] knew that we were witnessing something memorable, exciting, probably unprecedented, and, at times, altogether weird."
