Separated from his parents, Jim has to survive on his own for three years in the midst of war. The book was made into a critically-acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg, with the screenplay by Tom Stoppard, in 1987. The gift inscription, dated the year of publication, includes the note: "who remembers Jaime [JG Ballard] in Shanghai." One of the great novels of the Pacific front in World War II.
