First printing of the popular anti-Western, the basis for the film of the same name.
Fine in near-fine jacket.
"Whereas classic Westerns portray the whites as representatives of civilization and the [Indigenous peoples] as barbarians, this one suggests the opposite [...] this film suggests that the land was conquered through the use of brutal force that decimated people and nature." – Kasdan and Tavernetti
A parody of the Western genre, at once witty and demythologizing, yet just as adventurous. The film adaptation of the novel takes its revisionist stance even further, especially in the context of the Vietnam War: in emphasizing the Native nations as peaceful, heroic, and flourishing (within a genre that typically accords hero status to white people), it condemns aggressive measures taken by the United States against other nations at home and abroad. Though not without problems, the popular film is an important example of the growing revisionist Western movement that developed in the late 1960s.
