Inscribed first printing of the first American edition by the Brazilian writer, about an Andalusian shepherd boy whose travels introduce him to an alchemist who changes his life.
Fine in about fine jacket.
"[A]bout the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts."
When the 1988 first printing of THE ALCHEMIST in Portuguese sold only 900 copies, Coelho's publisher dropped the book. It was only after another publisher resurrected it that THE ALCHEMIST succeeded and made him one of the best-selling Latin American writers of the 20th century. "By using a fable, I was trying to convey a message," Coelho told PUBLISHERS WEEKLY in 2003: "I was also trying to understand myself better. When you use symbolic language, like I do in The Alchemist, you talk to your own soul and other people's souls, too."
