First issue of the first Madeline book, a picture book about a girl's experiences at a Catholic boarding school in Paris.
Very good plus in very good plus to near-fine jacket.
"In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines..."
Bemelmans drew on various experiences for his own life to write this first MADELINE book: his time at boarding school, the convent where his mother was educated, and even meeting a little girl with her appendix removed while recovering in the hospital from a bicycling accident. Even the images in MADELINE are composed from the perspective a child, such as the depiction of the impossibly tall teacher Miss Clavel. Nice copies in the original dust jacket in collectible condition are increasingly scarce.
