Artist's publication of found poetry, honoring many of those killed – primarily Black residents – in the July 1967 Detroit riots.
LIST OF VICTIMS IN THE DETROIT RIOTS
"William Jones, 32, a Negro from Birmingham, Ala., shot when the police fired at a supermarket looter."
Each victim is identified by name, followed by age and race, as well as a brief sentence describing the circumstances of their death, likely taken from newspaper accounts. Included in the list are the names of Aubrey Pollard, Carl Cooper, Fred Temple, and others whose stories were featured in Kathryn Bigelow's acclaimed 2017 film, DETROIT. Ronald Gross was a prominent proponent of both found and concrete poetry, perhaps best known for his book POP POEMS issued by Simon and Schuster the same year as this broadside (which is noted as a "Kinetic Pop Poem"). OCLC locates about half a dozen copies; a few more are noted in various archival holdings. A stark and ephemeral memorial.
n.p. n.p, 1967. 2.5" x 2.75" folded; 8.5" x 11" unfolded. Very good plus.
Single sheet, offset printed, folded in sixteenths, each section both recto and verso containing a word of the title (which reveals itself as the sheet is unfolded) or statement concerning, with one exception, African Americans killed in Detroit. Some soil, edgewear. Else sound.
