Fresh off becoming the first woman novelist to win a Pulitzer Prize for AGE OF INNOCENCE, in this book Wharton "has at last laid claim to her own narrative authority," according to Dianne L. Chambers. Wharton addressed the effects of gendered obstacles women face in HOUSE OF MIRTH, but in GLIMPSES OF THE MOON she analyses the causes underlying those obstacles, critiquing "broader cultural narratives about romantic love, female virtue, and motherhood" (Chambers). Popular upon publication, the book was not received favorably by critics and has only recently been revitalized as an important late career work.
