First printing of this classic photobook in which Sherman's portraits — always of herself, but almost always nearly unrecognizable — exploring the fluidity of identity and the performative nature of gender.
UNTITLED FILM STILLS
"What sometimes gets forgotten in the fog of analysis that surrounds Untitled Film Stills is that they are good photographs, put together with a rare combination of calculation and spontaneity, of knowingness and naivety." — Parr & Badger
On the one hand, Sherman's stylized "stills" from nonexistent movies can be viewed as sly appropriations of Hollywood film tropes, alluding to mysterious post-structuralist narratives. On the other, these images, which are simultaneously self-portraits and not self-portraits, embody radical notions of the self that increasingly appear with each passing year more and more ahead of their time. Though the initial Film Stills series was completed in 1980, it was not published as a book until this edition in 1990. Arguably Sherman's defining work, and certainly her most popular and best known.
