Signed first edition from the noted Japanese photographer.
"The works are neither oil paintings not traditional portraits [...] the actual people seem much more alive than the actual figures in the [...] museums." — Dr. Rolf-E Breier, from his Foreword
Published in conjunction with exhibitions at the Guggenheim Berlin, Bilbao, and New York (as well as The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), PORTRAITS gathers Sugimoto's black-and-white portraits of figures from history and art, almost entirely photographed in various wax, natural history, and art museums. These stark, elegant images straddle the line between traditional portraiture and more radical notions of appropriation. With texts by Nancy Spector, Carol Armstrong, Norman Bryson, and Thomas Kellein. Also includes an interview with the photographer by Tracey Bashkoff, as well as an exhibition history and bibliography.
(New York): Guggenheim, (2000). 12" x 11". Original full yellow cloth. In original photographic dust jacket. 170 pages, with numerous illustrations, including 75 plates reproduced in tritone (with a pair of two-page gatefolds). Signed by Sugimoto on front free endpaper. Signature a little thin due to high gloss paper, with a couple of small unobtrusive smears. Overall, sharp and bright.
Fine in like jacket.
