First U.S. printing of this scarce historical overview of hair and popular culture from 1940 to 1990.
"Soon nightclubs all over the world were full of animatronic [Grace] Jones clones, all with immaculately chiselled flat-tops..."
Peppy, opinionated, thoroughly illustrated guide to half a century of hairstyles and the cultural upheavals behind their popularity, beginning with the post-war military-inspired crew cut and proceeding through the gleaming floppy hair of Frank Sinatra and his successors. Jones, currently U.K. editor of GQ, centers the bulk of his attentions on male styles until the bouffant and beehive era, devoting roughly equal time to women's hair fashions thereafter. With notes on the "groovy wigs" of Carnaby Street boutiques, the late-sixties flowering of Regency dandyism, the punk era, and the exceptionally good hair of '80s goths. Oddly uncommon, a colorful, stylish, and vibrant overview.
(New York): Thames and Hudson, (1990). 10.5'' x 8.25''. Original glossy pictorial wrappers. 112 pages. Traces of soil to back cover; light foxing to half-title page. Minor wear to corners.
