First edition, first issue of this unusual large-format Beatrix Potter book, a rather suspenseful story of a near reversal of the food chain.
Very good plus.
"Anna Maria, make me a kitten dumpling roly-poly pudding for my dinner."
Beatrix Potter's beloved Hill Top farm was home to a variety of creatures, some invited and some not. Such was the case of the rat infestation of 1906, during which time the rodents became so brazen that the caretaker's wife saw "a rat sitting up and eating its dinner under the kitchen table in the middle of the afternoon" (Linder, 191). It is easy to see where Potter found the visual inspiration for the rotund Mr. Samuel Whiskers, whose efforts to dine on TOM KITTEN are foiled by John Joiner the friendly dog.
