'But, Valentine,' said Fay Middlecote. 'Haven't we heard a lot of this before from T.S. Eliot, and all sorts of other people. Besides, we are supposed to be on a holiday. And where does Henchman come in? I can't see any resemblance, except that he uses crutches. And on the slenderest evidence you say he likes fishing."
Powell's first novel following the twelve-volume A Dance to the Music of Time, THE FISHER KING uses its Arthurian motif of the wounded king bound to the land to explore the imposition of mythic models on real and independent people, and the uses and consequences of interpreting them through that lens. Witty and cerebral, the novel "remains an enigma" (John Gross).
