"All I can say here is kuda whyo-ha, thanks, in our Tewa tongue." – foreword by Velarde
Velarde was one of the best-known Native artists of her generation, and one of the few Native women painters to see major success in the form of awards, large commissions (like the murals for the museum at the Bandelier National Monument), and solo exhibitions. In the realm of children's book publishing, Velarde noticed the lack of Native authors and decided to record stories recalled from her childhood. Aside from the landmark 1939 publication of I AM A PUEBLO INDIAN GIRL, which was both written and illustrated by Native creators, picture books tended to feature Native artists paired with white teachers of Native students. Velarde decided to tell the stories of her own Pueblo heritage herself alongside her own illustrations, making this one of the earliest commercial children's picture books both written and illustrated by a single Indigenous artist.
