First printing of this early Robbins novel, the basis for an Elvis Presley film.
Fine in fine jacket.
"I was just another schnook. I didn't stand a chance."
The basis for the hit Elvis Presley vehicle "King Creole," A STONE FOR DANNY FISHER was Robbins's third published novel; more serious and less lurid than some of its successors, but a best-seller just the same. Robbins, variously called the "Rembrandt of trash," the "dirty old man of American letters," and the "Onassis of supermarket literature," was a titan of the mass-market paperback world, one of the best-selling authors in history, and a flagrantly inventive liar: famously claiming to have been raised in an orphanage (he wasn't); to have joined the Navy at 15 (he didn't); and to have married a chorus girl, who died when a parrot bit her (she didn't). Robbins brought the same storytelling flair to his work, with an unerring sense of what would command the public imagination and a shameless desire to give the people what they wanted.
