Signed first printing of Ellroy's epic Los Angeles noir masterpiece.
Fine in fine jacket.
"Suppose it goes bad?"<br />"Then kill him."
"My intent with readers," Ellroy has said, "is to uproot them from their daily lives and force-feed large swathes of American history and more specifically Los Angeles history." L.A. CONFIDENTIAL is a case in point: set in the 1950s, a time not altogether unlike today, when a man could be a shaken cannister of compressed violence with the lid half unscrewed and still be a police officer, with a badge and a gun and a terrifying freedom to use it.
Ellroy has long been fatally attractive to filmmakers who perceive in his dark, graphic, stylized novels a cinematic quality they long to translate to the screen; nearly all attempts have met with mixed success or no success at all. Nearly all – except for L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. Curtis Hanson's accomplished, hugely praised 1997 adaptation won Academy Awards for its screenplay and for Kim Basinger's acting, and was nominated for eight others. Ellroy's own opinion of the film has varied over the years, but on one point he has held firm. Had he ever enjoyed an adaptation of his own work? one interviewer pressed him. "I enjoyed the money," he said.
