"Gecko, you say?" Frock murmured in mild surprise. "And it eats the hypothalamus.... how extraordinary."
First book in Preston & Child's series featuring the suspicious Aloysius Pendergast, special agent investigating cursèd relics at New York's Museum of Natural History, as well as a fearsome "Museum Beast" which turns out to be something even worse than a difficult curator: a mutated man-reptile creature who skulks in underground tunnels and emerges intermittently to lash out with supernatural strength at museum staff and tourists alike. The basis for a 1997 film starring Penelope Ann Miller and Tom Sizemore; the adaptation relocates the setting to Chicago, a city presumably less touchy about gaining a reputation for harboring Museum Beasts in the bowels of its beloved institutions.
New York: Forge / Tom Doherty Associates, (1995). 9'' x 6.25''. Original half yellow cloth with marigold yellow boards. In original unclipped ($22.95) dust jacket. Jacket art by Jim Thiesen. Signed by Douglas Preston on title page, dated 2/11/96. 382 pages. Laid in is an original pre-order bookmark for the title, also signed by Preston.
