OCTOPUSSY AND THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
"[T]his is the moralist Bond, who [...] is quite incomparable with the strip-cartoon superman of the film versions or of popular belief." – Philip Larkin, review in The Spectator
Comprised of two short stories in the Bond universe, this was the second short story collection by Fleming (after FOR YOUR EYES ONLY). Richard Chopping's artwork remained central to the Bond brand, and the fee he charged for OCTOPUSSY's now-iconic cover design led THE NEW YORKER to call him "the highest paid book-jacket designer in the world" (quoted in Gilbert). The large initial print run failed to sail as briskly as expected, with the result that the publisher updated the price with a sticker on the dust jackets of the unsold first edition copies, as here. Published posthumously, this 14th Bond book was the last of Fleming's Bond writings.
