First edition of Potter's first cat-centered story, and the first of her books to be published in a slightly larger format by Warne.
THE PIE AND THE PATTY-PAN
"The frontispiece of THE PIE AND THE PATTY-PAN is an accurate, and still largely unaltered, view of Hill Top farm." – Margaret Lane
In addition to depicting the scenery around her newly acquired farm, Hill Top, Potter spent some time getting the drawings of Duchess right, the faithful rendering of a cat proving to be more difficult than her previous rabbits and mice. She exchanged many letters over its progress with Norman Warne, who was overseeing the production for the firm, and after its completion Warne wrote her to propose marriage. Potter accepted, but Warne then died suddenly from leukemia. The unexpected tragedy marks the end of the earliest era of Potter's famous books. In later editions, this title was re-released as THE TALE OF THE PIE AND PATTY-PAN to fit with the rest of the series.
