"She hired Spade. Then then took him to bed to stop his questions."
THE MALTESE FALCON
By Dashiell Hammett
First Permabooks paperback printing of the hard-boiled classic of American noir detective fiction, with a misleadingly erotic cover design and marketing copy.
Very good plus.
THE MALTESE FALCON
Hammett, a former Pinkerton detective, was one of the primary pioneers of a distinctly American strain of detective fiction: the hard boiled. THE MALTESE FALCON captures many of the key traits of the genre, including a gritty setting (in this case 1920s San Francisco), morally ambiguous characters where no one seems entirely "good, " and an isolated, lone-wolf protagonist who lacks the gentlemanly demeanor of famous antecedents like Sherlock Holmes. First published in a pulp magazine, THE BLACK MASK, here it returns to its pulp roots during the post-war paperback boom. Like others of its kind, the design of this book focuses on sex to sell, despite very little content in the text to live up to the cover's promise. A delightful instantiation of this pulp phenomenon.
New York: Permabooks, (1957). 6.25'' x 4.25''. Original color pictorial wrappers with cover painting by Stanley Meltzoff. Red text block edges. M-3074 (25c). Publisher's ads at rear. xii, 178, pages. Faint wrinkling to wrappers, only very light creasing.
