"The term barber-monger in King Lear, is apparently applied to a person dressed out by a barber, a finical fop."
The fifth edition of Halliwell's DICTIONARY, first published in 1846-47, complete in two volumes. Volume I A-I includes Halliwell's definition of his scope and description of his method, followed by a 36-page essay on the English provincial dialects: their histories, pecularities, localisms, vowel shifts, et cetera, with illustrative dialogues. Halliwell, later Halliwell-Phillipps, was a collector of nursery rhymes and fairy tales, an inveterate defacer of antiquarian books, a Shakespearean scholar, and an accused book-thief who may or may not have stolen a rare 1603 Hamlet from his father-in-law's library. The DICTIONARY itself is a treasure-house of antiquities and obsolescences, tracing the appearance and disappearance of words familiar and strange through the byways of English literature and regional evolution. Useful, instructive, and as readable as a reference book can be.
