Second edition of this monograph on Anglo-Romani, with bibliography, grammar, vocabulary, and selected texts and transcriptions.
"Now the young folk do not talk deep. They are too gaujo-like now. They do not know what is right or wrong. When you ask them deep words they cannot tell you their real meaning."
Second revised and "greatly enlarged" edition, "having passed through a stage of evolution from a lower to a higher stage of development," per the authors' preface. An overview and grammar of the language of the "Anglo-Romanes," divided by Smart and Crofton into the two broad categories of "the Common wide-spread corrupt dialect" and "the 'Deep' or old dialect, known only to a few aged Gypsies, which contains many inflexions and idioms, which has its own 'ordo verborum;'...and which contains a minimum admixture of English words." The latter, considered by the authors to be both more authentic and in great danger of dying out, is the primary focus of this treatise.
