A DICTIONARY OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT DIALECT
"I cannot think the reason
Why women love young men,
For they are so falsehearted,
And true not one in ten"
Essential and influential dictionary of the insular vernacular, with tables of grammatical peculiarities and phonetically spelled pronunciations. William Henry Long, born in Calbourne on the Isle of Wight, was a writer, bookseller, and member of the English Dialect Society; his DICTIONARY was an important reference for a number of writers, and his collected 'songs sung by the peasantry' an invaluable sourcebook for modern folksingers, one group of whom recorded them under the tribute title "Long Songs." This copy includes an unsigned inscription: "From the author - An old Wolvesey student."
