Limited printing of Hall's exploration of Ambrose Bierce's valiant attempt to perpetrate a literary hoax, for fun.
"The plot, he realized, would have to be bared eventually, but in the meantime, there might be fireworks!"
Monograph on Ambrose Bierce's involvement in the 'Poe Hoax': in which Bierce, writer Carroll Carrington, and poet Herman Scheffauer cooperated in assigning spurious authorship of Sheffauer's poem 'The Sea of Serenity' to Edgar Allan Poe, who was by that time (1899) thoroughly dead and in no position to deny it. Bierce, Hall writes, participated in the hoax for the sheer joy of starting something, and was disappointed by the relative lack of scandal and controversy. Still, he did his best.
Includes the full text of The Sea of Serenity as an appendix.
