Curiously rebound early edition of Lawrence's much-suppressed Great Book, in a full snakeskin binding.
Very good plus.
LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER
"Do you think I don't know what a broken-backed snake that's been trodden on I was myself!"
Prefaced by Frieda Lawrence's Open Letter to the Public, identifying this text as "the standard edition of the final third version of his manuscript, unexpurgated and carefully revised from the first privately printed issue of LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER," published 5 years after the limited first edition. A striking and likely unique copy, sturdily rebound in snakeskin in possible (probable?) homage to Lawrence's narrative poem SNAKE ("He reached down from a fissure in the earth-wall in the gloom / And trailed his yellow-brown slackness soft-bellied down") and general recurrent serpentine fixations.
Hamburg / Paris / Bologna: The Odyssey Press, (1933). 7'' x 4.25''. Rebound in yellow-brown snakeskin. Patterned embossing to top edge, marbled endpapers. , 359, pages. Spine sunned. Binding slightly shaken.
