First edition, in which a young Cuban woman disguises herself as a man to avenge the death of her father and brother during the Spanish-American War.
Very good plus.
"She really meant it then: she was going to help herself."
Written by the New Zealander MP and barrister Hugh Hart Lusk under his usual pseudonym, HERNANDO is a romantic adventure novel with a backdrop of international intrigue during Cuba's fight for independence. The heroine is a student at Vassar when she learns of the death of her family members in Cuba. When she attempts to join the fight against the Spanish, she is rebuffed by Cuban leaders. She cuts her hair, masquerades as a man, and joins the rebels, meeting an American journalist who calls himself "a friend of Cuba" and wants to "contradict the lies of Spain." The two overcome numerous dangers together, eventually falling in love. After their marriage, the American still insists on calling his wife "Hernando."
