First edition, first printing, a beautiful copy of an early Oz title.
"When I wrote this book I thought it would be the last of the Oz stories, but the children would not let me stop." – L. Frank Baum
EMERALD CITY OF OZ was meant to be Baum's last about the fantasy land. However, much like Conan Doyle's attempt to kill of Sherlock Holmes, Baum eventually caved to reader pressure and carried on the series again. This title thus serves as the Oz equivalent of Holmes going over the Reichenbach Falls: "You will never hear anything more about Oz, because we are now cut off forever from all the rest of the world," Dorothy says at the end. Baum would eventually relent with the publication of PATCHWORK GIRL OF OZ in 1913.
