Signed limited first edition of Lurçat's original lithographs illustrating twenty of La Fontaine's fables, signed by the artist and publisher.
"Car tout parle dans l'univers;<br />Il n'est rien qui n'ait son langage."
Jewel-like illuminations of twenty fables of La Fontaine, with the bright colors and animal imagery Lurçat developed in several of his own bestiaries and tapestries. In a flexible style that varies faithful and intricate detail ("L'oiseau blessé par un flèche") with a bold use of natural motifs as semi-abstracted design elements, in what W.J. Strachan calls a "fantastic surrealism," sharing with Chagall – another great illustrator of La Fontaine – an "essentially romantic" quality.
