"It always makes me proud to love the world somehow — hate's so easy compared."
BIG SUR is in many ways Kerouac's reckoning with his fame. The thinly-veiled novel finds his literary alter ego Jack Duluoz retreating to the sanctuary of the California coast with friend Lorenzo Monsanto (i.e. Lawrence Ferlinghetti), only to discover (as we all do) that you can't really escape yourself. Written in the wake of the popularity of the Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs, et al, BIG SUR is in many ways an elegy to the Beat ideal — that bohemian utopia lost among crowds of beatniks and hep cats, angel-headed hipsters no more.
