First edition signed by Gilbert of his third collection of poetry, "imbued with austere clarity" (Knapp).
Near fine in like dust jacket.
"I came back from the funeral and crawled / around the apartment, crying hard, / searching for my wife's hair."
Gilbert's social proximity to Beat greats Ginsberg and Spicer may imply an associated stylistic proximity, but Gilbert wrote through a more traditional lineage. THE GREAT FIRES is dedicated to Gilbert's partner Michiko Nogami, who passed away in the same year his second book was published; poems such as "Alone," "How to Love the Dead," and "A Year Later" reflect on the emotional toll of the loss of a loved one, as well as the absurdity of coming to terms with death.
