ALONG THIS WAY was written "in part to remove all doubt that [THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AN EX-COLORED MAN] was indeed a work of fiction," notes the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY (40). As a rebuttal to his own work of fiction about "a light-skinned mulatto man who ultimately decides to forsake his black heritage," James Weldon Johnson's autobiography reveals details of his family's heritage and his eventful career (ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY, 39).
